Shooter (2007) is a gripping action thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as Bob Lee Swagger, a highly skilled former U.S. Marine sniper who becomes the target of a dangerous government conspiracy. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film combines tactical action, political intrigue, betrayal and revenge into a fast-paced thriller.
The story begins with Swagger living a quiet and isolated life after a disastrous military operation leaves him disillusioned with the system. His exceptional marksmanship and military experience make him the perfect person for a secret assignment. Government officials recruit him to help prevent a potential assassination attempt against the U.S. President.
However, the mission quickly turns into a nightmare. After the assassination takes place, Swagger realizes that he has been deliberately framed and is suddenly hunted as the prime suspect. Wounded and forced to disappear, he must rely on his military skills, intelligence and survival instincts to uncover the people responsible.
Along the way, Swagger receives unexpected help from FBI agent Nick Memphis, played by Michael Peña, and Sarah Fenn, played by Kate Mara. Together, they begin uncovering evidence that points toward a much larger conspiracy involving powerful individuals.
What makes Shooter particularly entertaining is its combination of long-range sniper sequences, tactical combat, chase scenes and conspiracy-driven storytelling. Mark Wahlberg gives the character of Bob Lee Swagger a tough and determined presence, while Michael Peña adds an investigative perspective to the story.
The film is based on Stephen Hunter's novel Point of Impact and has remained popular among fans of military action and conspiracy thrillers. IMDb currently lists the movie with a 7.2/10 rating based on hundreds of thousands of ratings.
